This is a testament that even the simplest craft ideas with a beautiful intention can still go terribly awry. This was the case in my celebration of Dr. Seuss today at our son's preschool. I read the idea to make a simple craft - a pencil with a pink pom-pom on top and a "speck" glued on in honor of Horton. I hand wrote the famous line, "A Person is a Person, No Matter How Small" since this was for preschoolers. Idyllic, yes. Successful, no.
We brought the pencils with the ribbon glued on, the pom-poms, the specks. Glue in hand, the children dipped the pencils in the glue, grabbed the poms, held them on. They set them down to listen to me read, "Green Eggs and Ham."
All went pretty well until they picked up their drying pencils and the pom poms fell off. One by one, the children were melting down and falling apart. By the time their parents arrived I managed to have six in tears.
It was terrible. Such a domino effect. Perhaps I won't let them MAKE the special thing next time. I'll have them completed and just read.
