Another package from an old friend arrived the other day. This was a padded envelope with a sweet note inside. The envelope contained two photos - one of my brother when he was about 7 and one from my dad's high school. Dad attended Payne High School in Ohio. It was a small class. The photo is yet another treasure from my old friend and my dear friend. They keep uncovering treasures in storage and sending me surprises from time to time. Dad is in the lower right, bottom. Handsome man, isn't he?
We laugh at home at old movies made during WWII time and the 30 somethings playing youths in these movies. Looking at this HIGH school photo makes me take those laughs back. Some of these people already look 50. Funny how times change our looks, mannerisms captured in photos and attitudes.
During this time in 1935, FDR signed the Neutrality Act, or Senate Joint Resolution No. 173, which he calls an "expression of the desireā¦to avoid any action which might involve [the U.S.] in war." The signing came at a time when newly installed fascist governments in Europe were beginning to beat the drums of war. War was brewing everywhere. Italy was invading Ethiopia, the depression was still in full swing. No wonder these graduating students looked older, they were. 10/10/1935 League of Nations denounces Italian invasion of Abyssinia, 11/14/1935 Nazis deprive German Jews of their citizenship.
