Four people, four days, eight gallons. Not enough; especially when the two smaller people were not key-op trained on how to use the toilet in the trailer.
We just completed the inaugural trip in our tent-trailer. It went beautifully except for a minor detail of mathematics and physics.
We assumed that with four for four with eight we would be fine. Not so. Our black water tank was filled up by Saturday night.
(For those of you who don't have experience with a trailer or other RV's with toilets, the black water refers to the holding tank that holds the toilet water. The gray water is for the sink and shower. RV's/trailers have tanks of varying sizes. Sometimes camping spots have a hookup that you connect a hose from your RV to a drain in the ground and it goes direct to a sewer system. That's a full hook-up, along with electric and water).
If you don't have this option, you have to dump it at the end of your trip. This is usually done at the front entrance to the campground at a dump station. Even though RV toilets are conservative when they flush it down, the gallons fill up quickly if you are not careful.)
Back to our tale.
"How could this be?" we wondered with angst as the evening approached which is prime potty time with two children. We decided to do some detective work.
We asked the children to demo for us how they flush. BINGO! They held down the flusher for a LONG while. No wonder the small tank filled it up. When RV'ing, you have to flush quickly. CRUD.
Sunday morning found us packing up the entire trailer so we could motor over to the front of the campground and visit the dump station (EWWWWW). Not a fun way to start the day. Then, we drove back to where we were and set it up again.
I told my husband it was good practice for him. He failed to see the humor in that statement.
They make these little, flat, plastic roll-away things for just such an occasion. Then you get to find a place to store this little gem of an accessory until you need it. GROSS. But it's better than packing it all up only to set it up again. With the children, we may have to go with this option.
They have now been trained and the rest of the trip we were able to not max out the tank.
